Here's what each grade actually means for sixth-form and university admissions. 1. **Grade 9** — Top performers — roughly the top half of old A* grade. 2. **Grade 7–8** — Equivalent to old A and A*. Required for top sixth-form colleges. 3. **Grade 5–6** — Strong pass; equivalent to old B–high C. 4. **Grade 4** — Standard pass; required for most apprenticeships. 5. **Grade 1–3** — Below pass; resit recommended. Targeting Grade 7+ requires consistent past-paper practice from year 10.
