Both Cambridge (CIE) and Edexcel offer IGCSE qualifications. Both are recognised worldwide. Both use A*–G (or 9–1) grading. Yet the day-to-day experience differs meaningfully — and if your school offers both, choosing the right board can lift your child's grade by 5–10%. Here are the seven differences that matter. ## 1. Exam sessions - **Cambridge (CIE)**: May/June and October/November. Some subjects also offer March (India only). - **Edexcel**: January and May/June. October/November for a shorter subject list. Edexcel's January session is a genuine advantage for students who need a resit — Cambridge students wait 6 months, Edexcel students wait 4. ## 2. Grading systems - **Cambridge** offers both A*–G and the 9–1 numeric grading (school choice). - **Edexcel IGCSE** uses 9–1 grading exclusively since 2018. If your child is applying to UK sixth-forms that specify "Grade 7" or "Grade 8" requirements, Edexcel matches the UK GCSE grading conventions directly. ## 3. Coursework availability - **Cambridge** offers coursework routes in more subjects — English First Language, Geography, History, ICT, Art & Design, Design & Technology. - **Edexcel** has moved most subjects to 100% terminal exam. Coursework survives only in Art, DT and English Literature (limited). If your child is a strong writer or researcher who tests poorly under time pressure, Cambridge's coursework routes offer a meaningful grade lift. ## 4. Paper structure and length **Cambridge Maths (0580)**: 4 papers across Core and Extended tiers, calculator and non-calculator split. **Edexcel Maths (4MA1)**: 2 papers, both calculator, single tier. Edexcel Maths is often perceived as slightly harder question-by-question but shorter in total exam time. Cambridge Extended Maths spreads difficulty across four papers, which reduces per-paper pressure. **Cambridge Sciences (0620/0625/0610)**: Multiple-choice paper (Paper 1), theory paper (Paper 2/4), and Alternative to Practical (Paper 6). **Edexcel Sciences (4CH1/4PH1/4BI1)**: Two theory papers only — no multiple-choice, no practical paper. Students who struggle with recall-based multiple choice often prefer Edexcel Sciences. ## 5. Tiered vs single-tier papers - **Cambridge** offers Core (max grade C) and Extended (A*) tiers in Maths, Sciences and languages. - **Edexcel** offers Foundation (max 5) and Higher (up to 9) tiers in Maths only. Sciences are single-tier. For students at risk of failing, Cambridge Core provides a stronger safety net across more subjects. ## 6. Global recognition Both boards are accepted at UK, US, Canadian and Australian universities. In practice: - **UK universities**: Treat them identically. UCL, Imperial, LSE, Oxbridge — no preference. - **US universities**: Both accepted. Occasionally a US admissions office is more familiar with the "IGCSE" brand from Cambridge specifically. - **UAE schools**: Historically Cambridge-dominant but Edexcel has grown significantly since 2020, especially at GEMS schools. - **Pakistan**: Cambridge dominates (~85% of English-medium schools). Edexcel is available at select international schools. ## 7. Textbook and past-paper availability - **Cambridge**: Vast third-party textbook market (Hodder, Cambridge University Press, Collins). Past papers going back to 2010 for most subjects. - **Edexcel**: Pearson textbooks (in-house) plus Hodder and Collins. Past papers back to 2011 (9–1 spec from 2018 onwards). Cambridge's older past-paper archive is a genuine revision advantage — you get more variants of every question type. ## 8. Decision framework Ask these four questions: 1. **What does your school offer?** Most schools run one board only. If yours offers both, ask which their teachers have more experience marking. 2. **Does your child need a January resit option?** Choose Edexcel. 3. **Is your child strong at coursework and weak under time pressure?** Choose Cambridge. 4. **Do you want tiered safety nets in Sciences?** Choose Cambridge.
